What happens during a well-woman exam?

At your exam, Dr. Dejean takes your vitals, reviews your medical history, and asks about your overall health. She recommends screening tests, a flu shot, and may suggest an HPV vaccine if you haven’t been immunized yet.

Depending on your age and risk factors, Dr. Dejean suggests a bone density test to assess your risk of osteoporosis, a common condition after menopause that makes you more prone to broken bones. She may recommend hormone replacement therapy to address menopausal symptoms.

Next, you have a pelvic exam and Pap smear to look for early signs of cervical cancer. Dr. Dejean may recommend a mammogram depending on your age and medical history.

Your visit with Dr. Dejean is an ideal time to ask questions about your overall health or any changes you've noticed in your body.

When do I need a Pap smear?

Medical guidelines suggest having your first Pap smear at age 21 and continuing to have this cancer screening past menopause.

If you have an abnormal result, Dr. Dejean may wish to repeat your Pap test more frequently. Doing so allows her to closely monitor changes in your cervical cells to safeguard your health.

Can I ask about contraception during my well-woman exam?

Feel free to discuss family planning and contraceptive methods with Dr. Dejean. If you’re interested in long-lasting reversible birth control, she can insert an IUD or contraceptive implant during your well-woman visit. These long-term contraceptive options prevent pregnancy for 3-10 years.

If it’s time for your annual well-woman exam, call the office today or schedule your visit online with Boca Women's Health.
